New Project Spotlight: CSX Camden Street Storm Drain Replacement
The CSX Camden Street Storm Drain Replacement was a technically complex, design-build project located in a heavily traveled section of downtown Baltimore, Maryland, which consisted of replacing a 48-inch-diameter brick storm drain, originally built in 1891, that crosses directly under the CSX railroad tracks in the Howard Street Tunnel. Download this project spotlight to see how Clark Construction overcame many technical and time-sensitive challenges using progressive design-build to deliver the project safely, on time, and on budget.
Message from WDBC President Larry Johnson, PE, DBIA, PMP
600 years ago, Filippo Brunelleschi, an Italian master builder, was designing and building cathedrals, churches, and hospitals of the Renaissance era. Often overlooked, Filippo Brunelleschi also invented hydraulic machinery which has evolved into equipment used to build and operate our water and wastewater facilities today. Filippo Brunelleschi is now considered to be one of the first design-builders ever.
In 1999, the DBIA established the Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award, which is the highest individual honor DBIA bestows. It is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and innovation in the advancement of design-build project delivery. After a little research I discovered that since its inception, there have been 18 Brunelleschi Awards given, seven of which have been awarded to individuals who currently or previously worked for WDBC members, five of which practiced or are still practicing in the water industry, and two of which are currently active in the WDBC. Congratulations to our WDBC member firms who have been connected with these extraordinary Brunelleschi Award winners:
2002 – Preston Haskell, Haskell 2009 – Mark Alpert, CH2M HILL/Jacobs/Integrated Delivery Solutions 2010 – Jerry Porter, Kiewit 2013 – Michael Loulakis, Capital Project Strategies, LLC 2016 – Peter Tunnicliffe, CDM Smith 2017 – Roger Johnson, CDM Smith 2019 – David Crawford, Sundt Construction
And to Mark Alpert, our current Executive Director, and Michael Loulakis, one of our current at-large directors, on behalf of the current WDBC regular and advisor members, what an honor and pleasure it is to work alongside you in advancing collaborative-delivery methods for our water industry owners and practitioners.
Extraordinary Times Call for Extraordinary Partnerships
In the wake of the coronavirus crisis, maintaining critical water and wastewater operations has never been more important. Yet, ensuring continuity of operations has never been more challenging, and it will require using every tool in the utility manager’s toolbox.
