Updating the Water Design-Build Handbook

In early 2016, the WDBC will publish the 4th Edition of the Municipal Water and Wastewater Design-Build Handbook. Changes to this edition include new case studies, chapters on financing and contract management; with updates provided to the glossary, the Transition, Fixed-Price and Progressive Procurement chapters, and adding a reference section. WDBC will reach out to industry members for input in its development and has set up an owners forum for use in this purpose.

Soccer Fields on Top of a Wastewater Treatment Plant?!

Hats off to Karen Pallansch, Alexandria Renew’s Chief Executive (10 years) who presided over October 23's public viewing  of a remarkable feat in this industry! Providing the community with a new athletic field and bike trail beneath the newly constructed 18 mgd biological treatment plant

ARE’s whole complex has been encroached upon over the past years with development that includes luxury condominiums, schools, retail and businesses on one side, and the expansion of I-95 on the other.

“Walt embodies the essence of our “greatest generation” – the folks who stepped forward and figured out how to implement the lofty mandates of the new Clean Water Act of 1972, and whom collectively have done more for the quality of the water in our country than any other group of people.”

“…………..there may be no person ever that has done more to protect the water of the Potomac, Rock Creek, Anacostia and Chesapeake Bay, and that he has done so by working so well not as a single person, but always at the side of others….”

WDBC Welcomes UCI to the Advisors Group

Established in 1950, UCI is a multi-discipline general contractor specializing in the heavy and industrial construction markets. UCI has grown into a leading edge company with project sites throughout the United States, particularly in the Midwest. Our clients range from small rural municipalities to the world's largest energy providers.

Combining the Toyota Production System with construction industry practices we have created a formal process which allows UCI to complete a project more quickly and safer with a clear cost/benefit solution for our clients, over and above that of traditional methods. UCI provides PREDICTABLE PERFORMANCE™.

UCI promotes and uses the same care into design-build projects as we do to our other construction management initiatives, infusing knowledgeable staff, management systems and resources. With a Design-Build project, UCI works directly with the owner and selects the design team to work with the build team. Some of the benefits of Design-Build include:

  • Single Source Responsibility, less conflict
  • Potential for Lower Costs and Constructability
  • Early Commissioning and ROI
  • Cost Predictability
  • Reduced Owner Staffing
